Lönnström Art Museum’s summer exhibition in the Gallery showroom at the Teresia and Rafael Lönnström Home Museum will open on 1 July 2017. Entitled Summer Moments – Teresia Lönnström’s Art Purchases 1984–1986, the exhibition showcases 12 works of art by seven prestigious female artists who established themselves by the 1980s: Marjatta Hanhijoki (b. 1948), Inari Krohn (b. 1945), Anitra Lucander (1918–2000), Marjukka Paunila (b. 1949), Laila Pullinen (1933–2015), Ulla Rantanen (b. 1938) and Anita Snellman (1924–2006).

Teresia Lönnström (1895–1986) began to acquire works for the art collection in the early 1980s after the decision was made to establish an art foundation bearing her name. The works she purchased for the collection were all contemporary art, and one of the collection’s focal points was works by female artists. As the collection grew more space was required, and in 1982 Teresia had a gallery wing added to her home.

Teresia Lönnström was assisted in the acquisitions by art historian Eila Pajastie (1918–1994), an art critic and also a friend of Teresia’s. Although the views of an outside expert did influence the profile of the collection, Teresia Lönnström’s selections were always based on her personal preferences.

Summer Moments will be open from 1 July to 1 October 2017 during the opening hours of the home museum. The Gallery in the home museum also provides information about ongoing projects of the Lönnström Art Museum.

The main focus of Teresia and Rafael Lönnström Foundation’s art collection is on 19th and 20th century Finnish paintings. Most of the collection is on permanent display in the home museum. The oldest part of the collection, consisting of works by foreign artists from the 19th century, originate from the childhood homes of Teresia and Rafael Lönnström.
